World’s First PET Bottle Recycling Plant to Reach Net Zero
Electricity use accounts for over 80% of total emissions at FIGP, and therefore, its GHG reduction strategies focus on improving energy efficiency and incorporating renewable energy. Beginning in the second half of 2022, FIGP has been making monthly purchases of certificates of carbon offset from Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. The purchased certificates cover electricity usage for the entire plant and have avoided 11,750tCO2e in GHG emissions. FIGP reached net zero in September 2022, becoming not only the first net-zero rPET plant in the industry, but in the entire world.. The plant will continue the practice to cover plant-wide electricity usage. The Kansai plant, which is currently under construction, is poised to become FENC’s second net-zero rPET plant by installing renewable energy equipment such as solar power panels and purchasing renewable energy certificates.
